What are Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs)?

Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) are composite materials made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers. The polymer is usually an epoxy, vinylester or polyester thermosetting plastic that is combined with a fiber, such as glass or carbon, in order to make the polymer strong and stiff.

Currently, these polymers are used in almost every kind of advanced engineering, from aircraft to bridges. One common example of an FRP is a fibreglass hockey stick. The wood is covered with the fibreglass (the fiber part) and then the polymer (the epoxy). These bond together to create a stiff, strong coating that protect the wood and makes the stick last much longer than a plain, wooden stick.

When building a concrete structure, structural strengthening is a very important aspect. It is very common to see steel rebar placed in the concrete to provide reinforcement and added strength. But the downside of using steel is that it will rust and interfere with electromagnetic environments. When reinforcing existing concrete, metal rebars can be bulky and more challenging to use.

By using FRPs, concrete reinforcing can be done without the worry of corrosion. FRP rebars can be created, molded into whatever shape is necessary during the molding process. They are lighter in weight and easier to handle. They are an almost perfect project for concrete repair because they provide added strength without the excess weight that comes from steel.  FRP rebars have been used for decades and are accepted by structural engineers worldwide.

Vector Construction’s expertise in using FRP rebar to strengthen existing structures is second to none and they are a leader in the concrete reinforcement community.  We use the ASLAN Fiber Reinforced Polymer product line that is known worldwide for the highest of qualities. If you need your concrete repaired or reinforced, Vector Construction can provide you with the best products and most experienced staff.
